Classification of Oscillators

The oscillators can be classified in the following ways.

1.       According to the generated waveform.

           (a)     Sine wave oscillation

           (b)     Relaxation or non-sinusoidal oscillators.

2.       According to the fundamental mechanism involved

           (a)     Feedback oscillators

           (b)     Negative resistance oscillators.

3.       According to the associated circuit components

           (a)     RC oscillators

           (b)     LC oscillators

           (c)     Crystal oscillators

4.       According to the frequency range

           (a)     Audio frequency (AF) oscillators 

           (b)     Radio frequency (RF) oscillators
           (c)     VHF or microwave oscillators.
